Fire Safety
In the event of a fire, please be aware of the following
- Awareness of your surroundings, know your building’s entry as well as nearest exits.
- Keep your assistive devices near your bed side i.e. eyewear, walker, cane, flashlight etc.
- In case of emergency follow, the standard procedure. Remember to PULL the “RED FIRE ALARAM” while leaving your apartment
- If you decide to stay in your apartment, call 911 to inform them and tell them know your address as well as apartment #, then follow the fire safety procedure.
- Use CAUTION going to the balcony because if the fire is below your suite, you will get all the smoke in your apartment.
- In case of fire DO NOT go up stairs. There is no exit on the roof top.
- Once you exit your building, DO NOT re-enter. Stay away from the building.
- The smoke is worse than the fire. Most fatalities occur because of smoke inhalation and not by the actual fire.
Other important information
- If you notice that any of your Fire Extinguishers are damaged, or the Exit Light is not working, inform superintendent immediately. The Fire Extinguisher dial should be in “green”.
- Good housekeeping will keep all of us safe! Please check your extension cords, old lamps and unplug kitchen gadgets while not in use.
- Do not overload the power. E.g. Do not use the toaster, hairdryer and iron at the same time.
- Never leave the stove unattended, especially when cooking with oil.
- Do not try to put out a cooking fire with water. That would be dangerous and deadly. Always keep the lid by the pot/stove, so in case of fire, you can cover the pot quickly.
- Please push down your dry garbage bag through the shoot. Do not leave the shoot door open. If there is a fire in the garbage room, the smoke will spread throughout the building very quickly.
- Families should have a designated meeting place in case of emergency.
- Temporary shelter should be arranged in case of unforeseen situation at Club 66.
- The building has a list of people who need assistance that is available to the fire department. If your situation changes and you need to add your name to that list, call the Superintendent.
Power Failures
There are a number of points to remember in the case of a power failure:
- Purchase a flashlight that is kept plugged in to an electrical outlet so that when the power goes off, the light will come on. This gives you the chance to find the other items you need.
- Be very careful when using candles. Do not place them close to lamp shades or any other flammable item and never leave candles unattended.
- The building has a generator which allows us to operate one elevator as well as maintain minimum lights in the hallways.
- In any power failure, be careful with the amount of hot water you use.
- If the power is off for an extended period of time, have a friend or family member you can call and go to if necessary.
